DHAKA, July 5, 2025 (BSS) – The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka today celebrated the 63rd anniversary of Algeria’s Independence Day, with renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Bangladesh and promoting global peace, multilateralism, and economic cooperation.
Speaking at a reception hosted to mark the occasion, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani described the day as “a powerful symbol of resilience and victory,” recalling the end of 132 years of colonial rule and the sacrifices made by over 1.5 million martyrs during the country’s liberation war from 1954 to 1962.
Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury attended the celebration as the chief guest while diplomats, government officials, and representatives from various sectors were present.
Ambassador Saidani paid special tribute to the historic bonds between Algeria and Bangladesh, recalling that Algeria was the first Arab country to recognize Bangladesh following its independence in 1971.
“Algeria proudly holds the distinction of being the first Arab country to recognize Bangladesh, standing by its side during pivotal moments and supporting its integration into the international community,” he said.
He noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971, the two countries have maintained a relationship “grounded in mutual respect and solidarity,” working together on global platforms to advance multilateralism and a more just international order.
Highlighting the growing economic cooperation, the Ambassador said, “The establishment of the Algeria-Bangladesh Business Forum and the exchange of economic delegations reflect our growing partnership and shared vision for sustainable development.”
He also mentioned that high-level visits are being planned to further expand collaboration in various sectors.
On the economic front, Ambassador Saidani said Algeria—Africa’s second-largest economy—is actively working to diversify its economic base and attract global investment.
“In 2024, foreign investment surged to 8.6 billion USD, signaling increased confidence in Algeria’s economic future and its evolving legal and business landscape,” he noted.
Recalling Algeria’s historical role in supporting liberation movements across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, he said, “Rooted in the enduring principles of the Revolution—sovereignty, dignity, and justice—Algeria has consistently championed global liberation movements,” including unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples.
The envoy also reiterated Algeria’s commitment to international peace and regional stability.
As a current non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria remains “a key contributor to peace and diplomacy” and firmly upholds multilateralism as a means of resolving global conflicts.
The celebration also marked Algerian Youth Day, observed alongside Independence Day.
“The youth played a vital role in the liberation struggle and continue to be at the forefront of Algeria’s journey, shaping the nation’s future as policymakers, diplomats, and innovators,” the Ambassador said.
He concluded by expressing optimism about the future of Algeria-Bangladesh relations, adding, “May this cherished occasion deepen the friendship between our two nations and inspire continued progress.”
