DHAKA, July 19, 2025 (BSS) - Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today said that safe and affordable housing facilities must be ensured for low-income people in the city.

"In the past regime, people had been following Dhaka-centric policies. Dhaka and its surrounding areas are not well connected, as a result people come to Dhaka for work and are unable to move back after work," he said.

He was speaking at a design-research presentation and discussion titled 'Affordable and Inclusive Housing in Dhaka' organized by Architecture Department of BUET in the city.

The adviser said the presentation made by the Architecture Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) will play an important role in ensuring safe and affordable housing facilities for low-income people in Dhaka city.

He said the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and Housing Authority are not allocating plots now, adding, "After the mass uprising of the students, the government cancelled quotas for plots and flats."

He said RAJUK is taking an initiative to provide apartments through lottery to ensure housing facilities for low-income people.

The adviser said that laws are being drafted to protect agricultural land in the country.

BUET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman chaired the design-research presentation and discussion, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury spoke.

Representatives from the 2019 batch of the Department presented research designs and recommended for housing on two sites in Tongi and Shyampur areas.

The discussants emphasized coordination between urban planning, architecture and policy formulation for inclusive housing facilities.
