DHAKA, July 20, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has started the second shift of its cancer treatment services using the advanced Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine.
 
To mark the launch of the second shift of radiotherapy service, BMU oncology department organized an inauguration ceremony today at BMU which was addressed by BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam.

The second shift of the service will continue from 2.30pm to 6pm. In first shift, BMU is giving radiotherapy service from 8am to 2.30pm.

In the first shift, 40-45 patients are receiving the services while it is possible to give the services to around 25 patients in the second shift. 
  
BMU Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-VC (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhter and Chairman of the Oncology Department Professor Dr Md Syed Akram Hossain addressed on the occasion. 

The Vice-Chancellor, in his speech, said that the introduction of the second shift of radiotherapy medical service is an example for other departments of this university to follow. 

He emphasized the importance of conducting medical education, research, and services in the public interest. "We must prioritize the public interest in our approach to medical education, service, and research," he said.

"Healthcare providers must refrain from discriminatory behavior and move away from elitist attitudes. Every patient deserves dignity and transparency," he added. 

He said, "Patients must be fully informed about treatment costs, expected outcomes, and have a say in their care. This is not only ethical but also crucial to build trust in our healthcare system." 

Professor Dr. Shahinul Alam directed oncology professionals to enhance their focus on research and proposed the development of treatment guidelines in view of the country's socio-economic context, in addition to adhering to international protocols. 

He further stressed the need for integrated collaboration among all related departments and support staff to elevate oncology services to global standards.

Mentioning the introduction of the second shift of radiotherapy services as a major achievement and achievement of BMU, Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad expressed hope that the Clinical Oncology Department will become a role model.

Pro-VC Prof Dr. Mujibur Rahman Hawlader acknowledged the challenges in cancer treatment and noted the trust patients place in BMU, urging healthcare professionals to strive to meet their expectations and ensure a better quality of life for them.

Treasurer Dr. Nahreen Akhter stated that the reactivation of the LINAC machine underscores BMU's commitment to affordable and accessible care, rather than profit.

She called for accelerated research and emphasized the importance of ensuring that patients can return home healthy and satisfied.
