DHAKA, July 30, 2025(BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today acquitted one Mobarak Hossain of Akhaura in Brahmanbaria district from the death penalty for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed today pronounced the verdict by scrapping a judgment given by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-1).

Senior lawyer S M Shahjahan and Imran A Siddque moved for Mobarak Hossain while ICT Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim was present before the court on behalf of the prosecution.

The ICT-1 in a judgment on November 24 in 2014 awarded death penalty and life-term imprisonment to Mobarak Hossain for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971. Two of the charges out of five were proved during the trial but he was relieved from three other charges against him.

Later, in 2014, Mobarak Hossain filed an appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for cancellation of the judgment and seeking acquittal from the charges.
