DHAKA, July 30, 2025 (BSS) – Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a Taka 2,841 crore five-year development project of Dhaka University.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof. Niaz Ahmed Khan announced this at a press conference at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury virtual Classroom.
The five-year project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2023.
As per the project plan, six academic buildings, four residential halls for 2600 female students, five residential halls for male students, residential buildings for the house tutors of the newly build halls, two residential buildings for teachers and officers and other five buildings, including administrative building will be built under this project.
Besides, the project includes reforming four water bodies, beautification of the campus, existing service lines repairing, developing sports ground, setting up public toilets and developing drainage and waste management systems.
Addressing the press conference, the VC said the amount approved by the ECNEC is the biggest allocation for overall development the university in recent time.
The project has been taken mainly to increase the academic capacity of the university in addition to turning the university full residential one following the British University model, he said.
He extended thanks to all who helped in securing the grants, saying, academics and students from other universities of the country will be allowed to use research centers, labs, and other facilities which will be built under the project.
Speaking on the occasion, Pro vice-chancellor (Admin) prof. Sayema Haque Bidisha expressed gratitude to the authority and the nation for approving the project.
“We have been demanding for such a development project since long. But now it is on the way to be implemented,” she said.
She called on the alumni of the university to come forward for more sustained development initiatives so that teachers and students can conduct more impactful and rigorous research works.
Outlining the projects greenery plans, DU treasurer Prof. M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, the project will not devour open spaces of the campus, rather it will foster more eight percent green space.
He requested journalists to closely follow the project implementation work to ensure transparency. The university authorities will publish progress report in every six months regarding the advancement of the project.
