DU VC returns home from Japan

DHAKA, July 31, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan recently returned home following a six-day official visit to Japan at the invitation of Ehime University, said a press release.

During the visit, he held a series of high-level meetings with Ehime University President Professor Dr Nishina Hiroshige and other senior officials to strengthen ongoing academic and research collaboration between the two institutions.

As part of the engagements, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to further enhance bilateral cooperation. 

In addition, the VC signed a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) to implement a joint project titled "Implementing Water Quality Monitoring and Purification Technologies to Control Health Risks for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area."

The project will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), with Dhaka University serving as the lead implementing institution. 

Professor Dr Anwar Hossain of Dhaka University's Fisheries Department will serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Bangladesh component.

The VC also visited several advanced laboratories and research facilities at Ehime University, accompanied by Professor Anwar Hossain.

In Tokyo, Prof Niaz delivered a keynote speech at an international seminar hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation titled "Rohingya Refugee Crisis: Regional Security Risks, Pathways to Repatriation, and Livelihood Challenges." 

He also participated in a high-level meeting with the foundation's leadership to discuss future opportunities for joint research with Dhaka University.

Additionally, he met with the Director of Research at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) to explore collaborative policy research and climate-focused initiatives.
    
The Vice-Chancellor said the visit has opened up new avenues for international research and academic cooperation for Dhaka University.
