RANGAMATI, Aug 2, 2025 (BSS) - Adviser to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Supradip Chakma today called on the Forest Department to adopt a more proactive approach in protecting the country's natural environment, with special focus on the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a week-long tree plantation campaign and tree fair organized jointly by the Rangamati District Administration and the Forest Department at the city gymnasium grounds.

Highlighting the critical role of responsible afforestation, Supradip emphasized the need to maintain the ecological balance of the region through thoughtful conservation efforts.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Habib Ullah presided over the event while Senior Secretary of the Planning Ministry MA Akmal Hossain Azad, District Police Superintendent SM Farhad Hossain and Rangamati Region Forest Conservator Mohammad Abdul Awar Sarkar were also present, among others.

The adviser stressed the importance of conducting a detailed survey of economically valuable trees in the Hill Tracts to ensure environmental preservation aligns with local needs.

He emphasized that no tree should be removed without first identifying a suitable alternative to maintain the natural balance

He further advocated expanding afforestation efforts beyond fruit-bearing species to include trees vital for sustaining the ecological integrity of the region.

As part of the campaign, the adviser distributed saplings to students from various local schools, encouraging youth participation in environmental conservation.

Before the inauguration, a colorful rally was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

The rally, which circled the main roads of Rangamati, concluded at the tree fair premises, spreading awareness on the significance of planned afforestation for building a greener future.
