New hostels to be a safe place for medical students: Health Adviser

DHAKA, Aug 28, 2025 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum today said the new hostels of Sir Salimullah Medical College would be safe and entertaining places for the students.

“I hope that the students will engage themselves with creative works”, she said.

The health adviser made this remark while laying foundation stone of a 15-storey male student hostels and two 12-storey girls hostel of Sir Salimullah Medical College on the college campus here.

The hostels are being constructed under a project titled “construction of 19 hostel buildings with modern facilities for 10 medical college students”.

“Our students stay in old dilapidated hostel buildings . . . they remain in panic as the hostel can collapse anytime and it is impossible for the students to continue their study under such risk situation”, said the health adviser.

While participating in the inaugural function, Secretary of the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division, Dr. Md Sarwar Bari who was also a student of the Medical College, said there is a huge accommodation crisis in the colleges, stating that the housing crisis of the Sir Salimullah Medical College will be resolved through construction of the hostels.

The government has started construction works of 19 hostels at 10 public medical college hospitals, said Professor Dr Nazmul Hossain, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The total cost of 15-storey male student hostels will require Taka 101.77 crore while the two buildings of 12-storey girls hostel require Taka 46.53 crore.
