No fertilizer crisis in country: Agri secy

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Aug 28, 2025 (BSS) - Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian today said that there is no fertilizer crisis in the country.

“Even sufficient stock is available to meet the demand till December; so, at present there  is no fertilizer crisis in the country, ” he said.
 
During  a visit to an irrigation project of the Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in Gomostapur today, he said misinformation about fertilizer shortages is being spread by the  activities of some dishonest and unscrupulous individuals. 

He noted that 70% of the Agriculture Ministry's budget—around TK 35,000 crore—is spent on fertilizer subsidies annually.

Speaking about groundwater crisis in the Barendra region, the secretary said farmers are being encouraged to grow less water-intensive crops. 

Plans are also underway to preserve and reduce dependence on groundwater, carry out a feasibility study for the proposed TK  800 crore project.

Earlier, Dr. Mian spoke with locals near the Mahananda and Purnabhaba rivers and later inaugurated the new BMDA office in Gomostapur. 

He also exchanged views with farmers in the Machkoil area.

BMDA officials including Executive Director Md Tariqul Islam and senior engineers accompanied him during the visit.
