DHAKA, Aug 29, 2025 (BSS) - The national round of the 16th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition was inaugurated today at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), bringing together law students from across the country.

"No matter the cause or purpose of war, its rules apply equally to all parties. We are living in a time when wars and conflicts are on the rise and today it is more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to the laws of armed conflict-laws that every nation must uphold to limit the consequences of war," Nicolas Fleury, Head of Delegation of the ICRC in Bangladesh, said while addressing the opening ceremony.

Jointly organized by IUB and the ICRC, the competition aims to promote awareness of international humanitarian law (IHL) among young law students and to enhance their advocacy skills.

Over the next two days, participants will present legal arguments on a hypothetical IHL case study. Organizers said the initiative marks a milestone in advancing legal education and promoting IHL in Bangladesh.

Named after Henry Dunant, the co-founder of the Red Cross, the competition was first held in 2001 and has steadily expanded to include national and regional rounds across South Asia.

This year, participants will debate complex legal issues related to armed conflict and human rights. The winning team will represent Bangladesh at the Asia-Pacific round in Hong Kong next year.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, IUB Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Tamim urged the participants to open their minds and perspectives and even learn from the fellow participants.

"This is a platform where you will confront complex humanitarian issues through compassion for humanity and the rigour of law. We are extremely proud to be working alongside the ICRC, shaping a generation of lawyers who will bring meaningful change to society," he added.

Over the two-day competition, 51 participating teams from 17 of the country's leading universities are presenting their arguments before a panel of distinguished legal experts and specialists.

Organizers said the competition will play a crucial role in enhancing students' skills in research, analysis, advocacy, and public speaking.
