KHULNA, Sept 6, 2025 (BSS) - Khulna University (KU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Rezaul Karim emphasized the need for proper waste management, calling on all citizens to act responsibly in tackling plastic pollution.
"Activities like the plastic-for-plant exchange by the Forestry and Wood Technology Club will help build an environmentally conscious young generation and strengthen the university's image," he said.
The VC made the remarks on Friday afternoon while addressing the closing ceremony of the "Exchange Plastic for Plants" campaign on the KU campus.
"We must ensure proper waste management, avoid plastic littering and plant more trees to create a greener, healthier and livable Bangladesh. Our aim is to reduce pollution, raise awareness and combat global warming through greenery," he added.
The Forestry and Wood Technology Club organized its signature programme "Give and Take Season 3" on September 4-5 at Hadi Chattar, where participants received plants in exchange for plastic bottles. For every 500ml plastic bottle, a sapling was distributed.
This year, over 1,100 saplings including indoor, fruit-bearing, forest and ornamental plants were handed out during the two-day campaign, which drew enthusiastic participation from KU students as well as residents of Khulna city.
Director of Student Affairs Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat, speaking as special guest, lauded the initiative and suggested allocating spaces for environmental competitions among Forestry and Environmental Science students.
Club president Md. Insan Ali presided over the programme, while students and environmental groups including Lexicon, Khulna Prokriti Paksha and Dhaka City Tour (Tourism with Conservation) extended their support.
Organizers noted that "Give and Take" is not just an exchange but a commitment, with each plant symbolizing hope against pollution and carrying the message of reducing plastic risks while encouraging tree plantation.
