JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Sept 6, 2025 (BSS) - The Election Commission of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) has cancelled the candidacy of Amartya Roy Jon, Vice-President (VP) candidate from the ‘Sompriti Oikya’ panel, declaring him ineligible both as a voter and a candidate under the constitution of the JUCSU.

The decision was announced through a notification published on the university’s official website on this afternoon.

According to the notification, Amartya Ray John, a student of the Archaeology department under the 2017-18 academic session, Registration No. 46984, and a resident of A F M Kamaluddin Hall, has been disqualified from the voters’ list and candidate list in accordance with section 4 and 8 of the JUCSU constitution.

Amartya Ray is a former president of the JU unit (Amartya-Riddhya faction) of Bangladesh Students’ Union.

Contacted, Amartya Ray said, “Formally, I cannot say much right now. Discussions are ongoing within our panel, and we are consulting with everyone. We will not take any decision that goes against the interest of the students.”

He said that they would proceed in a systematic way in accordance with the university law and the JUCSU Election Commission’s regulations, and that he could not share details at the moment but would inform everyone once a decision was reached.

Asked about the possibility of filing a writ petition with the High Court challenging his disqualification, he said, “We are not considering that for now. However, we will make decisions after consulting all stakeholders and keeping students’ interests in mind. Once a final decision is made, we will share it.”
