Shopnodal pays tribute to Marceau with ‘Macbeth’ mimodrama

DHAKA, September 22, 2025 (BSS) - Sopnodal, a theatre and drama band staged Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Macbeth’ Mimodrama on the occasion of the 18th death anniversary of world-renowned French mime artist Marcel Marceau, popularly known as the ‘Master of Mime. 

The drama was staged at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy this evening with the cooperation of Ministry of Cultural Affairs. 

The production, based on William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, was adapted by Juena Shabnam and directed by Zahid Ripon, following the traditional style of Bangla mime.

The play depicts the eternal story of courageous general Macbeth, whose greed, selfishness and boundless ambition drive him to murder King Duncan, seize the throne, and commit successive atrocities to maintain power. Macbeth also ultimately faced the same tragic fate.

Sopnodal’s Macbeth is noted as the first-ever full-length mime drama staged through an experimental laboratory approach making it the 18th production of the Sopnodal band. 

Shakespeare’s works have been interpreted worldwide across stage, film and television in diverse forms.

The cast included Juena, Hasan, Sumaiya, Nishk, Shishir, Shyamal, Jebu, Sonali, Anindya, Orko, Nisorgo, Shafik, Jowad, Ali and others. 

Marcel Marceau was born on March 22, 1923 in Strasbourg of France. He dedicated his life to mime artistry and globally known as a legendary figure in the art form.

The legendary mime artist passed away on September 22 in 2007.
