DHAKA, Sept 24, 2025 (BSS): A legal notice has been served to concerned parties to halt illegal sand extraction from the Meghna River and to take legal action against those sand lifters.

The notice was issued today through post and email by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Md. Solaiman (Tushar) on behalf of Md. Kamal Hossain, a resident of Munshiganj, for the sake of public interest.

The respondents  have been asked  to take effective measures within seven days, failing which legal proceedings will be initiated.

According to the notice, parts of the Meghna River in Munshiganj have become sites for illegal weapon training and havens for sand mafias. Numerous riverside villages are being shaken day and night by the sound of hundreds of excavators.

Agricultural land, mosques, madrasas, and hundreds of houses are at risk of being submerged. The riverbank erosion, destruction of aquatic biodiversity, and disruption of the natural river flow are causing severe environmental degradation. The growing erosion and flood risks are threatening local communities, farmland, residences and infrastructure.

The notice cited violations of the Sand Mining and Soil Management Act, 2010, the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995, and other legal provisions, including directives from the Ministry of Environment and relevant authorities prohibiting unauthorized sand extraction.

The legal notice urged immediate action to stop illegal sand extraction from the Meghna River and calls for the identification and prosecution of individuals, groups, or entities involved in these unlawful activities.

Barrister Solaiman Tushar said the notice was issued under the Environment Conservation Act, 1995; the Bangladesh Environment Court Act, 2010; and other applicable environmental protection laws.
