Workshop on climate-resilient farming held at BAU

MYMENSINGH, Oct 11, 2025 (BSS) - An inception workshop on the research project titled "Strengthening Advanced Education and Research on Farming System Dynamism and Climate Resilience Towards Sustainable and Improved Farm Productivity" was held today at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

Department of Agronomy organized the event at conference hall of the Faculty of Agriculture, under the Academic Transformation Fund (ATF) of the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project, supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.

BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan attended the workshop as chief guest, which was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khairul Hasan, head, Department of Agronomy.

Dr. Dia Sanou, deputy FAO representative in Bangladesh; Prof. Dr. G.M. Mujibar Rahman, dean, Faculty of Agriculture; and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Musharraf Uddin Bhuiyan, director, planning and development and head, ATF Secretariat, were present as special guests. 

Sub-Project Manager (SPM) presented an overview of the initiative, which aims to modernize the Centre for Farming Systems and Climate Resilient Agriculture (CFSCRA) with advanced facilities for research, innovation, and capacity development.

Key components include establishment of a high-tech research laboratory and model farm, modernization of academic curricula, promotion of climate-resilient postgraduate research, training and outreach programs, and international collaboration with institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Agricultural University.

Speaking on the occasion, VC Prof. Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan said the project would play a vital role in developing climate-smart farming systems and building skilled human resources for sustainable agricultural transformation in Bangladesh.

Dr. Dia Sanou emphasized that the initiative aligns with FAO's vision of strengthening national capacity for food security and resilience under changing climatic conditions.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion session moderated by Dr. Moin Us Salam, a freelance consultant and crop modeling expert, followed by a vote of thanks and lunch.
