DHAKA, Nov 8, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladeshi architect and Aga Khan Award for Architecture laureate Marina Tabassum today emphasized on climate-responsive and culturally-rooted design in modern architecture to tackle the growing challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization.

“Architecture is not just about constructing buildings. it is a living art deeply connected with culture, society, and humanity. The role of an architect goes beyond creating structures, it is about designing something that speaks to people, the environment, and the spirit of the times,” she said.

She was addressing a seminar on “Between Erosion and Emergency” organized by Ceramic Bangladesh Magazine in the capital.

Noting the urgency of adapting architectural practices to the realities of climate change, she said, “Our work must remain rooted in the reality of this land. Architecture must evolve in response to climate change, urbanization, and the transformation of human lifestyles.”

Referring to her ongoing projects in Bangladesh’s riverine and coastal areas, Marina Tabassum said her team has been developing climate-resilient and relocatable housing solutions in collaboration with local communities.

The seminar began with a welcome speech by Architect Jalal Ahmed, Senior Advisor of Ceramic Bangladesh Magazine and Founder & CEO of ArchiConnect.

Later, a panel discussion was held with the moderation of Architect Mahmudul Anwar Riad.

Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BCMEA) President and Vice-Chairman of Monno Ceramics Moinul Islam said, “The two sectors complement each other. To advance further, we must strengthen ties among industry, academia, and research.”

The event brought together leading architects, engineers, ceramic entrepreneurs, senior officials, and media professionals from across the country.
