KHULNA, Jan 8, 2026 (BSS) - Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) Professor Dr. Md. Maksud Helali on Thursday said students should not confine themselves to textbooks only, regular participation in sports activities is very important for their physical and mental development.
The VC made the remarks while formally inaugurating the first-ever ‘Shah Cement–KUET Inter-Department Football Tournament–2026’ at the university’s central playground in the afternoon as the chief guest.
He added that such inter-department competitions help foster fraternity and unity among students.
“We want KUET students to excel not only in academics but also in sports and cultural activities,” he remarked.
The tournament has been organized by the Office of the Director of Student Welfare, with sponsorship from Shah Cement.
Deans of different faculties were present as special guests at the opening ceremony, while Director (Student Welfare) Professor Dr. B. M. Ikramul Haque presided over the event.
A total of 16 departments are participating in the tournament, divided into four groups. Four matches were played on the opening day today.
The football tournament, supported by Shah Cement and Janata Bank PLC, will continue until January 13, 2026. Matches will be held daily in the morning and afternoon as per the scheduled fixtures.
