DHAKA, Jan 9, 2026 (BSS) - BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research team of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), has dismissed disinformation circulating regarding the murder of grocer Sarat Chakraborty, alias Moni, 40, in Narsingdi.

BanglaFact confirmed that no communal link was involved in the killing of Sarat Chakraborty.

According to BanglaFact, after speaking with three family members of the deceased and analysing reports from mainstream Bangladeshi media as well as information from the local administration, it was found that claims that 'jizya tax' was demanded from him due to his Hindu identity are baseless and false.

The murder took place on Monday night in the Sultanpur area of Charsindur Union in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi.

Several fact-checking organizations said that since last year, the spread of false information about Bangladesh through foreign channels of a neighboring country has increased, particularly targeting the interim government and the parties and organizations that participated in the mass uprising of 2024.
