DHAKA, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (R.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain today said casting a 'Yes' vote in the 2026 referendum is essential to bringing meaningful change in Bangladesh and advancing the country's democratic transformation.
The adviser made the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting on the Referendum 2026 campaign at the Panchagarh Government Auditorium, organised by the district administration.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, he described the 2026 referendum as a historic opportunity in Bangladesh's democratic journey.
"It will allow citizens to directly express their opinions on key issues of state governance," he said.
"This process will make democracy more participatory, transparent and accountable," he said.
Dr Sakhawat said the referendum is not merely a procedural exercise, but a true reflection of the people's sovereign power.
By ensuring direct public participation in major state decisions, he said, the government seeks to strengthen democratic practices on a solid foundation.
Warning against the consequences of a negative outcome, he said if the 'Yes' vote fails to prevail and the 'No' vote wins, the opportunity to rebuild the country that emerged through the July mass uprising, at the cost of immense sacrifice, would be lost.
"We would return to the old system," he added.
To bring real change, free the nation from past autocratic practices and ensure genuine empowerment of the people, he said, citizens must vote 'Yes' in the referendum.
The shipping adviser also stressed the importance of raising public awareness to ensure the success of the referendum.
He said the true objectives of the referendum must be communicated to the people through responsible, fact-based and constructive campaigns, rather than misinformation or confusion.
In this regard, he said, coordinated efforts by the district administration, field-level government officials, public representatives, teachers, journalists and members of civil society are vital.
Dr Sakhawat further said the referendum will be conducted under a clear legal and constitutional framework, with transparency and neutrality ensured at every stage so that public opinion is reflected freely and credibly.
"Through Referendum 2026, people will not only cast votes, but will also become active stakeholders in shaping the future of the state," he said, urging all citizens to act responsibly.
He praised the people of Panchagarh for their awareness and civic sense, expressing optimism that the district would once again play a leading role in making Referendum 2026 a success.
Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Kazi Md Sayemuzzaman chaired the meeting, which was attended by senior district administration officials, representatives of various government departments, public representatives, teachers, journalists and people from different walks of life.
