
RANGPUR, Feb 21, 2026 (BSS) - The Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day-2026 was observed today at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) with due dignity paying rich tribute to the Language Movement martyrs.
The observance began with Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali laying a wreath at the Shaheed Minar of the university at one minute of midnight, paying deep respect to the 1952 Language Movement martyrs.
At this time, a one-minute of silence was observed in memory of the language martyrs.
In the morning, with the sunrise, black badges were worn and the national flag was lowered to half-mast.
Later, the Vice-chancellor inaugurated the mourning procession in memory of the language martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bangla language.
Teachers, students, officers and employees of various faculties, departments and offices participated in the condolence rally.
Starting from the south gate of the university's administrative building, the rally went around the park intersection (Abu Sayeed Square), circled the main roads of the campus and ended at the Shaheed Minar Square.
Then, the Vice-chancellor placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar paying tribute to language movement martyrs.
At this time, wreaths were laid by the deans of various faculties, various departments, residential halls, institutes and various social and cultural organizations of the university.
A discussion was organized at the cafeteria marking the day.
The VC attended the discussion as the chief guest with the convener of the Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day-2026 Celebration Committee Associate Professor Md Masud Rana in the chair.
Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology of BRUR Dr Md Moniruzzaman delivered his presentation as the main speaker.
Professor of the Department of Mathematics Dr Md Tajul Islam, Registrar (Additional Responsibilities) and Proctor Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, Head of the Department of Political Science Dr Md Tanziul Islam, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry Dr Md Harun-al-Rashid, Additional Registrar of the International Affairs Department, among others, addressed the event.
In addition, a milad and a dua mehfil were held at the university's central mosque after the Zuhr prayers seeking divine peace for the departed souls of the martyrs of the great language movement.
