DU observes Int'l Mother Language Day with solemn respect

DHAKA, Feb 21, 2026 (BSS) - Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day were observed in a peaceful and solemn atmosphere at Dhaka University, with the Central Shaheed Minar becoming the focal point of homage.

In the first hour of Ekushey February, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan welcomed guests who arrived to pay tribute to the language martyrs. 

DU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-VC (Education) Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed and Treasurer Prof Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury were present, among others.

Coordinator of the Central Coordination Committee on Amar Ekushey observance Prof Dr. Md. Morshed Hasan Khan, Joint Coordinator Prof Dr. Abdus Salam, Member-Secretary and Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed, Pharmacy Faculty Dean Prof Dr. Selim Reza, along with teachers and university officials, were also present at the Shaheed Minar in the early hours.

Later, on behalf of the university, DU VC Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan placed a wreath at the martyrs' altar in the first hour of the day. Teachers, officers and employees of the university were present on the occasion.

A silent procession and 'Prabhat Feri' began at 6:30 am from the 'Smriti Chirantan' square, proceeding towards the Central Shaheed Minar to honour the martyrs, led by the Vice-Chancellor.

Pro-Vice Chancellors, the Proctor, Registrar, members of the Senate and Syndicate, deans of faculties, provosts and wardens of halls, chairpersons of departments, directors of institutes, office heads, teachers, students, officers and employees participated in the programme.

After Asr prayers, special munajat was offered at the university's central mosque, Masjidul Jamiya, as well as at mosques of all halls and residential areas, seeking eternal peace for the souls of the language martyrs.
