
DHAKA, Feb 21, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo today observed the Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day with due respect and solemnity, paying tribute to the language martyrs of 1952 through daylong programmes.
The observance began in the early hours with the laying of wreaths at the permanent Shaheed Minar at Ikebukuro Nishiguchi Park in Toshima City, according to a message received here.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Md Daud Ali, accompanied by embassy officials and representatives of Toshima City, paid homage to the language martyrs by placing a wreath at the monument.
Leaders of various political, social and cultural organisations of the Bangladeshi community in Japan, along with expatriates from all walks of life, also offered floral tributes through a Prabhat Feri.
Later, the Ambassador hoisted the national flag at half-mast at the embassy premises as the national anthem was played, in the presence of officials and staff.
The afternoon programme at the embassy auditorium began with prayers seeking eternal peace for the souls of the language martyrs. Messages issued by the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out on the occasion.
A discussion session highlighted the historic significance of Amar Ekushey and the global importance of International Mother Language Day.
Addressing the event, the Ambassador said the Language Movement of 1952 laid the foundation of Bangladeshi nationalism and is now globally recognised as International Mother Language Day, inspiring all nations to preserve their languages and cultures.
The programme concluded with special prayers for the peace and prosperity of the country, followed by an Iftar gathering in honour of civil society representatives and expatriate Bangladeshis.
