DHAKA, April 2, 2026 (BSS) – The 19th World Autism Awareness Day was observed today at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) through a series of programmes highlighting the importance of dignity, rights and equal opportunities for individuals with autism.
The programmes included a rally, seminar and drawing competition, among other initiatives, marking the day with the theme “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Matters.”
BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Prof Dr Nahreen Akhter, Director of the Institute of Paediatric Neuro Disorder and Autism (IPNA) Prof Dr Syeda Tabassum Alam, and Chairman of the Department of Paediatric Neurology Prof Dr Kaniz Fatema, among others, attended the programme.
Speakers at the programmes said that globally the prevalence of autism has increased from 1.7 percent to about 3 percent, terming the situation concerning. According to a 2014 estimate, 17 out of every 10,000 children in Bangladesh are affected by autism.
They stressed the importance of maternal care and treatment during pregnancy, early diagnosis, proper management, and support for children’s mental development. The speakers also underscored the need to enhance education and social rehabilitation for individuals with autism, raise parental awareness, reduce social isolation among children, and strengthen awareness campaigns through mass media.
The core message of the day was to ensure respect, rights and equal opportunities for people with autism. Speakers noted that every individual is unique and valuable, and autism should not be seen as a limitation but as a different ability that can contribute positively to society with proper support and care.
They also called for increased global efforts to raise awareness, eliminate discrimination and ensure social inclusion for individuals with autism.
