PM mourns deaths in Keraniganj fire, orders probe, support for victims

DHAKA, April 4, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman expressed deep shock and sorrow over the casualties in a fire that broke out at a tin-shed factory producing gas lighters in Keraniganj here today.
 
"Prime Minister Tarique Rahman mourned the deaths in Keraniganj gas lighters factory fire and asked the authorities concerned to investigate into the incident and provide necessary assistance to the victims," premier's Press Secretary Saleh Shibly told BSS this afternoon.
 
He said the Prime Minister talked to Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain about the incident and directed him to ensure proper treatment for the injured people. 
 
Shibly said Tarique Rahman also spoke to local lawmaker Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhaka district, superintendent of police (SP) and director general of the Fire Service and Civil Defence over the incident.
 
While talking with them over phone, the premier instructed to form separate probe bodies to investigate into the incident and bring the responsible persons to justice.
 
Earlier, a devastating fire broke out at the tin-shed factory producing gas lighters in the Kadamtali Gol Chattar area of Keraniganj around 1:11pm today, leaving at least five people dead.
 
According to officials, the blaze came under control around 4:44pm today.
