
DHAKA, April 14, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that the government has dedicated this Bengali New Year and the coming one year to building an agro-based economy in recognition of farmers’ contributions.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the “Bangla New Year 1433” celebration event organized by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at the National Theatre Hall this afternoon.
The minister said that Pahela Baishakh is a day of festivity and joy, emphasizing that the festival was born with the spirit of inclusivity, free from religious, racial, or social divisions.
Highlighting the importance of agriculture, he said, “To honor the contributions of farmers, the government has dedicated this New Year and the upcoming year to the country’s agro-based economy.”
Swapon also noted that the Bengali New Year originated by aligning with the Hijri calendar and the Gregorian calendar, primarily considering the economic convenience of farmers in Bangladesh.
He further said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman celebrated the occasion with farmers in Tangail, reflecting the government’s commitment to agriculture and the farming community.
Speaking as a special guest, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, adviser on policy, strategy, information and broadcasting, and cultural affairs to the Prime Minister, extended New Year greetings to the audience.
In her presidential speech, Cultural Affairs Secretary Kaniz Moula said that Pahela Baishakh has now spread universally among millions, adding that Bangladesh aims to move forward as a prosperous nation embracing all cultural diversity, including ethnic communities.
Director General of the academy Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed delivered the welcome speech, while Secretary Mohammad Zakir Hossain gave the vote of thanks.
Artistes of the academy made a cultural performance at the event.
