RAJBARI, April 14, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister's Adviser on the Ministry of Finance and Planning Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir today said the 'Krishak Card' initiative would bring a revolutionary change and ensure sustainable development in the country's agriculture sector.
"The government's ongoing initiatives to make agriculture technology-driven and self-reliant are centered on the Krishak Card programme," he told a farmers' card distribution programme held at Deogram union in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari today.
Dr. Rashed said, "The beginning of 21st-century agriculture is taking place through the Krishak Card. This card is not merely an identity document, but an integrated service platform for farmers."
He added that through the card, farmers would be able to easily access fertilizers, quality seeds and fuel for irrigation in a timely manner. This, he said, would reduce production costs, ensure timely cultivation and bring stability to agricultural output.
For marginal farmers, the card would act as a "tool to strengthen their hands," he added.
Highlighting the importance of agriculture, Dr Rashed said around 70 percent of the country's population is directly or indirectly dependent on the sector. Ensuring financial and technological support for farmers remains one of the government's top priorities.
He also said under the programme, marginal farmers will receive Tk 2,500 yearly in direct financial assistance through the card to help them overcome seasonal crises, while general farmers would benefit from easier access to fertilizers, seeds, fuel and other agricultural inputs.
Referring to past conditions, he said the agriculture sector had long suffered stagnation and farmers faced deprivation and hardship. The present government, he added, had successfully placed agriculture on a stronger foundation.
As part of future plans, he also mentioned a nationwide programme to plant 2.5 crore trees.
The adviser urged all to avoid corruption, protect public property and recover encroached railway lands. He also called on everyone to stand against oppression and support the oppressed.
A total of 1,036 farmers were enlisted under the programme in Goalanda upazila, of whom 935 Krishak Cards (Farmer Cards) were distributed due to technical reasons. Seedlings were also distributed among farmers. The pre-piloting initiative is being implemented in five villages of Deogram union, including Uttar Char Pachuria, Tenapacha, Dakshin Char Pachuria, Debgram and other areas.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam also addressed the programme, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parveen.
Zila Parishad Administrator Md. Abdus Salam Mia, Superintendent of Police Md. Manzur Morshed, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md. Shahidul Islam and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sathi Das were also present, among others.
The state minister for cultural affairs said a rural agricultural fair would be organized in Tenapacha village next winter, and plans are underway to build a cold storage facility for onion preservation in the char areas.
