
DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh has underscored the need for strengthened regional cooperation to ensure a sustainable future at the 82nd session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam led the Bangladesh delegation at the session being held in Bangkok from April 21 to 24 under the theme "Leaving no one behind: advancing a society for all ages in Asia and the Pacific", said a press release received here today.
Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul inaugurated the session.
In his speech, Fakir Mahbub Anam called for closer cooperation among regional countries to tackle challenges such as climate change, global economic pressures and uncertainties. He said mutual partnerships and coordinated initiatives are essential to ensure sustainable development.
Highlighting Bangladesh's internal progress, Fakir Mahbub Anam said the government is prioritizing support for small and medium enterprises, attracting investment and promoting innovation. He also emphasized skills development, employment generation and increased participation of youth and women in the digital economy.
The minister reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to social protection, healthcare, renewable energy and climate action, stressing that inclusive development requires collective efforts from all countries.
Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remains below expectations, highlighting the need for stronger regional cooperation, policy alignment and data-driven decision-making.
