Merit will decide Thakurgaon University appointments: Mirza Fakhrul

THAKURGAON, May 29, 2026 (BSS) - LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said no opportunity for nepotism would be created in the appointment of faculty or other staffs at Thakurgaon University.

“Hiring of faculty members would be strictly merit-based. No partisanship or political influence will be tolerated in any appointment related to the university. Only the qualified and meritorious will become teachers here,” he said.

The minister made the remarks this morning while inaugurating the temporary office of Thakurgaon University -- set up on the west side of the large field of the Government Boys High School -- in Thakurgaon city.
 
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Thakurgaon University is not just an educational institution, it is a reflection of the long-standing dreams and aspirations of the people of this region. He urged that the institution be developed to an international standard.”

“To build a modern and world-class university, the quality of education can never be compromised,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister and the government, the minister said, “The people of Thakurgaon have long demanded for a medical college and a university. To fulfill their demand, the government has taken the initiative to establish the university as soon as possible. 

The appointment of the vice-chancellor has already been completed and this temporary office has also been opened.

Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting with journalists at the Mirza Ruhul Amin Auditorium in the afternoon, said, "During the previous fascist government, about 500 journalists of the country were martyred. We did not want such a Bangladesh. Journalists must remain united to protect the rights of journalists and ensure media freedom in the new Bangladesh. Responsible and objective journalism can play an important role in the welfare of the country and the nation. 

State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Thakurgaon-3 MP Zahidul Rahman Zahid, University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Israfil Shaheen, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, Acting President of Thakurgaon Press Club Lutfar Rahman Mithu, senior journalist Abdul Latif, along with senior administration officials, political leaders, teachers and well-wishers were present.
