4-day programme on Tagore's birth anniversary begins at Shilpakala tomorrow

DHAKA, May 7, 2026 (BSS) - A four-day cultural programme featuring the works of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore marking his 165th birth anniversary will begin at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy tomorrow.

The cultural events will include performances of songs, dance, and recitations from Rabindranath Tagore's poems.

Tomorrow's programme will feature an event titled "Rabindranath: The Poet of Peace and Humanity" at the National Theatre Hall of the academy.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon will attend as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony tomorrow afternoon while State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin will be present as the special guest.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam will present the keynote paper in the programme.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy director general and poet Rezauddin Ahmed Stalin will preside over the programme to be organised by Shilpakala Academy with the cooperation of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

On the second day on Saturday, Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni will attend as the chief guest at 5:30 pm at the National Theatre Hall. State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom will be present as the special guest.

On the third day, Sunday, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury will attend as the chief guest. 

On that day at 5:30 pm, a cultural programme featuring Tagore's songs, dances, and recitations will be held. 

Earlier, at 5:00 pm, an art exhibition titled "Rabi in Paintings, Paintings of Rabi" will be inaugurated at Gallery-2 of the National Art Gallery building, to be organized by the Fine Arts Department.
 
The exhibition will continue until May 23, open daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.

On Monday, the closing ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm at the National Theatre Hall. 

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and political adviser to the Prime Minister Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi will join the event as the chief guest.

Following the discussion session, theatre troupe Prachyanat will stage the play "Achalayatan", directed by Azad Abul Kalam.

Besides, all district units of Shilpakala Academy across the country will organize discussions and various events commemorating the great poet and showcasing his works. All events will be open to the public.
