CHATTOGRAM, May 9, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur paid tribute to late Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, describing him as a true patriot who consistently spoke out for people's rights.
Speaking as the chief guest at a memorial meeting marking the third death anniversary of Dr. Zafar Ullah Chowdhury on Saturday, Nur said the late freedom fighter should be remembered as a national icon for future generations.
The event was organised by Dr. Zafarullah Smriti Parishad at the July Biplab Smriti Hall of Chattogram Press Club.
Member of Parliament Abu Sufian attended the programme as guest of honour, while Smriti Parishad President Sk Mozaffar Ahmed chaired the discussion.
Calling Dr. Chowdhury a "lighthouse of inspiration," Nur stressed the importance of preserving the country's historical legacy and remembering national figures who contributed to democratic movements and social justice.
He also urged authorities to include the life and contributions of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury in the national education curriculum so future generations can learn from his ideals and struggles.
Referring to the anti-autocratic movement against fallen fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Nur said Dr. Chowdhury played an inspirational role by encouraging opposition leaders to unite under an alternative democratic platform.
According to Nur, Dr. Chowdhury regularly communicated with political leaders including Mahmudur Rahman Manna, A. S. M. Abdur Rab, and Zonayed Saki to help strengthen democratic movements alongside the BNP.
Nur said the formation of the Democratic Mancha alliance in 2022 was inspired by Dr. Chowdhury's guidance and eventually contributed to the movement that led to the fall of the authoritarian regime.
