DHAKA, May 18, 2026 (BSS) – Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam has said the government has undertaken multidimensional initiatives to advance Bangladesh’s space, satellite, and drone technologies.

“Satellite, drone, and space technologies are not merely luxuries, but essential infrastructures for national development, disaster management, agriculture, fisheries, communication, and security sectors in this era of technology-driven development,” he said.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Satellite, Drones and Future Space Technology in Bangladesh,” at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital today.

Anam, also minister for posts, telecommunications and information technology, said that satellite technology would make it possible to forecast disasters, monitor river erosion, increase agricultural production, strengthen coastal security, and ensure the safety of fishermen in deep-sea areas. 

The government has already undertaken initiatives to quickly deliver cyclone and adverse weather warnings to fishermen, he said.

Regarding drone technology, he said that drones are no longer just tools for photography or entertainment; they are now being used as effective technological platforms for border security, agricultural management, surveying activities, and disaster response.

The minister also stated that the government is working on plans to establish new Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-based satellites in the future to collect clearer and more effective data and information. 

At the same time, he called for effective initiatives involving universities, research institutions, and stakeholders in the technology sector to expand the use of space data and applications.

Dr. Imadur Rahman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) presented the keynote paper.
