
DHAKA, May 25, 2026(BSS) – The government has announced a 25% fare discount for elderly and physically challenged passengers on metro rail and train services, along with dedicated women’s coaches on selected intercity trains ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The introduction ceremony was held today at Farmgate Metro Rail Station where Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam joined as the chief guest.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the government is working to make the country’s public transport system more humane, inclusive and passenger-friendly.
He stated that the special fare discount initiative aims to ensure easier and more dignified travel for the senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
He added that the government continues to introduce new public welfare initiatives to strengthen the social protection and improve citizen services.
The minister also announced that, following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, special women-friendly coaches are being introduced on intercity trains to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for female passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
Initially, one dedicated coach for women passengers has been introduced on the Sonar Bangla Express and Jayantika Express starting today. According to the minister, there are plans to gradually expand the service to all intercity trains across the country after Eid.
Metro Rail authorities said that citizens aged 65 and above, as well as persons with disabilities or special needs, will receive a 25 percent fare discount on single-trip metro tickets. Elderly passengers will be required to show their National Identity Card, while disabled passengers must present the “Subarna” identity card issued under the Ministry of Social Welfare.
