DHAKA, June 21, 2026 (BSS) - A two-day seminar commemorating poet Sufia Kamal and poet-lyricist Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal began today under the joint auspices
of the Department of Bangla of Jagannath University (JnU) and Bangla Academy.
The event of the first day was held at the central auditorium of the university today.
Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin attended the seminar titled 'Sufia Kamal: Life and Works' as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor said that such a seminar is very timely and significant in the present context. He noted that poet Sufia
Kamal is an inseparable part of the Bengali national identity. Overcoming various superstitions and obstacles of society, she played a vital role in
promoting female education and women's empowerment.
If a visionary personality like her had not worked for the expansion of women's education at that time, Bangladesh would have lagged behind by many
more years in this field, he added.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that Sufia Kamal did not limit herself to being educated, but worked tirelessly to make others educated and aware.
Alongside women's education, she also made outstanding contributions to the movement for establishing women's rights. She struggled throughout her life
to ensure women's just rights, property rights, and social dignity.
Professor Dr. A K M Mahbubul Haq of the Department of Bangla presided over the seminar, while Bangla Academy researcher Mahbuba Rahman delivered the
welcome speech.
On the first day of the seminar, Associate Professor of JnU Bangla Department Dr. Jannat Ara Sohaly presented an essay titled 'Sufia Kamal's Poetry:
Diversity of Subject and Perception'. Besides, Assistant Professor of the department Sanjida Masud presented another essay titled 'Distressed Nature's
Melancholic Woman: Eco-feminist Context in Sufia Kamal's Poetry'.
Teachers and students of the Bangla department along with participants from different levels were present at the seminar.
On the second day of the two-day event, various essays will be presented and discussions will be held on the life, literary works, and contributions of
