DHAKA, June 21, 2026 (BSS) - Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today said a nation that places greater importance on music reflects a more progressive mindset, underscoring the enduring significance of music in human civilization.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the two-day "Music Festival" organised at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy here on the occasion of World Music Day 2026, the minister said music is like a flower.
"Those who do not love flowers can commit even the most brutal crimes," he said.
Highlighting the timeless importance of music, the minister said melodies and harmonies have emerged from nature itself-in the songs of birds, the sound of falling leaves, the movement of water waves, and the streams cascading down mountains.
He said music creates close bonds from one country to another and among people across the world.
He further said music has been given importance in the nation's philosophy, art, literature and heritage.
"The more a nation values music, the more it reflects an advanced mentality. Although languages differ, people across the world can understand the resonance of melody and ragas," he added.
The minister expressed profound respect for all music lovers, vocalists and instrumentalists around the world.
The event, jointly organised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, was presided over by Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Kaniz Mowla.
Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Rezauddin Ahmed delivered the welcome address, while Convener of the Jatiyatabadi Samajik O Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) Helal Khan attended as a distinguished guest.
Secretary of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Mohammad Zakir Hossain delivered the vote of thanks. A colourful cultural programme was held following the inaugural discussion session.
On the first day of the festival, leading instrumentalists and musicians from home and abroad participated in solo and group performances.
Following the inauguration, invited guests enjoyed captivating performances at the main auditorium of the National Theatre Hall. The two-day festival will conclude tomorrow.
