SANGSAD BHABAN, June 21, 2026 (BSS) - Lawmakers today stressed the need for equitable distribution of budget allocations among all parliamentary constituencies, arguing that every MP has an equal mandate and should receive fair access to development funds.

Participating in discussion on the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026-27 in the Jatiya Sangsad, several MPs urged the government to ensure balanced allocation of resources rather than concentrating funds in constituencies represented by ministers.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled a Tk 9.38 trillion budget on June 11, setting a GDP growth target of 6.5 percent, following a provisional growth rate of 4.14 percent in the outgoing fiscal year.

BNP lawmaker Ashraf Uddin of Narsingdi-5 said all 300 constituencies should benefit equally from budget allocations, noting that in previous years development funds were often concentrated in ministers' constituencies.

Referring to infrastructure development in Narsingdi, he claimed that while nearly all unpaved roads in a former minister's constituency had been upgraded, many roads in neighboring constituencies remained unfinished. He stressed that equitable distribution of resources is essential for effective budget implementation.

Barrister Shakila Farzana, a BNP lawmaker from a reserved women's seat, said the proposed budget reflects the vision of a fast-moving Bangladesh. BNP MP Abu Mansur Sakhawat Hassan of Habiganj-2 described the budget as a step toward building a welfare state.

Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Jashore-5 said successful budget implementation would depend on curbing corruption.

National Citizens Party (NCP) lawmaker Abdul Hannan Masud of Noakhali-6 criticized the proposed increase in the tax-free income threshold, saying the rise from Tk 350,000 to Tk 375,000 was insufficient and could burden lower-income earners.

Opposition MP M Ataur Rahman of Narail-2 termed the budget highly deficit- and debt-dependent, questioning the realism of the National Board of Revenue's Tk 695,000 crore revenue target.

Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mazedur Rahman of Gaibandha-1 expressed concern over allocations for the northern region, claiming the proposed share remained disproportionately low despite assurances of balanced development.

Another opposition MP, Sheikh Jahangir Hossain Helal of Khulna-2, argued that the expenditure target had been set without adequately ensuring corresponding revenue generation.

BNP lawmaker Mst Tahsina Rushdir of Sylhet-2 urged the government to introduce allowances for families affected by enforced disappearances during the previous regime.

BNP MP Mushfiqur Rahman of Brahmanbaria-4 described the budget as people-friendly, saying its focus on investment, income growth and employment generation would benefit the public despite differing opinions on specific measures.

Opposition lawmaker Masood Sayedee of Pirojpur-1 alleged that ruling party MPs were receiving disproportionately higher allocations, leaving opposition lawmakers at a disadvantage.

Several treasury and opposition bench members also participated in the budget debate.
