
DHAKA, June 29, 2026 (BSS) - Md Shazid Hasan and Miftahul Jannat Rifat were elected president and general secretary, respectively, of the Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS), the central debating organisation of Dhaka University, for the 2026-27 term today.
According to the organisation's constitution, the newly elected executive committee will serve for one year from the date of assuming office.
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. S. M. Shameem Reza announced the election results at around 8:00 pm today. The results were later published in an official statement issued by DUDS.
DUDS Moderator Professor Amirus Salat, Assistant Election Commissioners Zubayer Hossain and Ragib Anjum, Election Observer Mohiuddin Muzahid Mahi and Election Secretary Md Sabbir Hossain were present during the announcement.
Newly elected president Md Sajid Hasan is a 2020-21 session student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture and formerly served as general secretary of Surya Sen Bitarkadhara and vice-president of the Islamic Studies Debating Club.
General Secretary Miftahul Jannat Rifat is a student of the 2020-21 session of the Department of Marketing. She currently serves as general secretary of the Athenium Debate Forum of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and is also the general secretary of the hall students' union.
According to an official release, the election schedule was announced on June 19, with nomination papers distributed on June 27. While four aspirants initially collected nomination forms for each of the two top posts, three candidates filed nominations for president and one for general secretary.
However, following the voluntary withdrawal of two presidential candidates this morning, Md Shazid Hasan and Miftahul Jannat Rifat were elected unopposed as president and general secretary, respectively.
