DHAKA, July 21, 2026 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain today said the true values of Bangladesh's independence would gradually fade if the spirit of the Liberation War is not preserved among the younger generation.

“If the new generation loses the spirit of the Liberation War, the nation will suffer immensely. Today, many people tend to confuse the events of 1971 with many other issues. But without the Liberation War and if martyred Shaheed Ziaur Rahman had not declared the country's independence, we would not have achieved this Bangladesh,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a memorial meeting for Bir Muktijoddha Prof Dr Md Abdul Quddus, a member of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council and a teacher of Bangladesh Medical University, at Shaheed Dr Milon Hall of the university in the capital's Shahbagh.

Recalling the atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War, Sakhawat Husain said widespread devastation had been unleashed in different parts of the country, particularly in Hindu-majority villages.

He said numerous villages were set ablaze while ordinary people were subjected to brutal torture.

Referring to the horrific incidents of violence against women during the war, the minister said many women were brutally killed and their bodies were left beside railway tracks.

Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain addressed the memorial meeting as the chief guest, with the Chairman of the Department of Urology of Bangladesh Medical University Prof Dr Md Saiful Islam in the chair.
