DHAKA, Sept 8, 2026 (BSS) - Food Minister Afroza Khanam today made a surprise visit to the Central Storage Depot (CSD) at Tejgaon in the city and inspected the quality and condition of rice and flour stored there.
The minister visited the CSD at around 10:00 am and reviewed the quality of the food grains, their storage condition and distribution activities on the spot, said a press release.
Of the 35 operational warehouses at Tejgaon CSD, the minister randomly visited 10 warehouses during the inspection and talked to the warehouse managers.
Afroza checked the registers to find out how long the rice and flour had been kept in storage.
The concerned officials briefed her in detail about the daily quantity of rice and flour distributed from the depot and the overall stock and distribution situation.
The officials informed the minister that Tejgaon CSD has a total of 43 warehouses, of which four are being used to store relief materials of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
Around 37,000 metric tonnes of food grains are currently stored in the 35 operational warehouses, they said.
When the minister was informed that several warehouses had become unsuitable for use, she directed the authorities to renovate them quickly and make them operational.
Afroza said she would take personal initiative, if necessary, in this regard.
During the visit, CSD officials and employees apprised the minister of various problems and limitations, including manpower shortages.
The minister listened to their concerns and assured them that the problems would be addressed gradually.
She said issues requiring the involvement of the Finance Ministry would be discussed with the ministry.
“Everyone has to perform their duties responsibly. I will come here from time to time without informing anyone in advance. Negligence of duty will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Afroza said.
She further said, “The country belongs to all of us. We are like one family. Just as we cannot allow anything in our own home to be stolen, we will not tolerate any irregularity or negligence regarding state resources.”
The minister directed all concerned to remain vigilant and perform their duties responsibly to ensure safe storage of food grains, maintain their quality and ensure proper distribution.
Food Secretary Abu Taher Md Masud Rana, Director General of the Directorate General of Food M Jashim Uddin Khan were present on the occasion, among others.
