DHAKA, Mar 17, 2026 (BSS)- The government has issued an order abolishing the lottery system for student admissions from grades one to nine in government and private secondary schools across the country, effective from the 2027 academic year.

The Secondary and Higher Education Division issued the order on Monday, stating that admissions currently conducted through lottery in all government and private secondary schools will no longer follow this system.

The order mentioned that, following the cancellation of the lottery system, student admissions will be conducted based on the opinions of relevant stakeholders.

It stated that the previously issued student admission policies for government and private secondary schools, dated November 13 and 19, 2025, have been canceled.

The Ministry of Education said that, instead of the lottery system, student admissions will now be finalized through merit based or other scientifically approved methods, following consultations with the appropriate authorities.

Addressing the issue, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said at a press conference on Monday that the decision has been taken to ensure the quality of the education system and in view of the long-standing demands of students and guardians.
