Liberation War sector commander KM Shafiullah passes away

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2025 (BSS) - Sector-3 commander in the 1971 Liberation War Major General (Retd) KM Shafiullah today passed away while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) here at the age of 91.

"Shafiullah, also former army chief, breathed his last at about 8:45 am at the CMH in Dhaka," Assistant Director Rashedul Alam of the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) told BSS.

The valiant freedom fighter had been suffering from multiple diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and fatty liver for long as he was admitted to the CMH on January 2.
 
His personal assistant Ziaur Rahman Moni said Shafiullah's first namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zohr prayers at the Kazi Abdul Hamid High School ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj, followed by the second namaz-e-janaza after Asr prayers at the Central Mosque of Dhaka Cantonment.

KM Shafiullah was born on September 2, 1934 in Rupganj, Narayanganj district. He served as the army chief until August 24, 1975.

From 1976 to 1991, he served as Bangladesh's ambassador to various countries, including Malaysia, Canada, Sweden and England for 16 years.
