DHAKA, Jan 26, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed today called for forging unity among political parties, students, citizens and stakeholders in the grater national interest.

"We want unity among all political leaders. Unity between political parties, students, and the general public is essential. I hope no one will create barriers to this end," he said.

He was addressing a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Muktijoddha Dal marking the 89th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
 
Hafiz said, "Facilitate the establishment of a parliament that can carry out reforms. Don't waste time unnecessarily. We respect you and want unity among all political figures. I hope none of you will create obstacles to achieving this unity".
 
He called for immediate electoral reforms to restore democracy, stating "A free and fair election is crucial at this moment. Give people the opportunity to elect their government. Three months is enough for the required reforms". 

Hafiz also highlighted the need for immediate reforms and said, "In 1971, we fought a war because there was no elected government. Why should we have to make debate for an elected government again?"
 
The BNP leader urged the students not to form a 'King's party' and said, "If you want to do politics, leave government backing and establish political organizations independently".

Highlighting the legacy of Ziaur Rahman, he praised his decisive leadership during the Liberation War in 1971. "Ziaur Rahman's fearless declaration of independence inspired the nation to take up arms. He led the war to victory, risking his life to ensure freedom for the country," he said.

Criticizing the corruption of the ousted Awami League government, Hafiz said, "Nowhere in the world, could evidence be found that a political party indulged in corruption like this. Thanks to the sacrifices of BNP and the student movement, we now have a chance to re-establish democracy". 

It is imperative for everyone to remain united during this time, he added. 

Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Muktijoddha Dal President Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, General Secretary Sadeq Ahmed Khan and Senior BNP leaders including Abdus Salam, Fazlur Rahman and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal also addressed the discussion.
