DHAKA, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced
Mohammad Rassel, managing director (MD) of e-commerce platform "Evaly", and
his wife Shamima Nasrin, also the chairman of the company, to two-year simple
imprisonment in a fraud case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partho Bhadra pronounced the verdict this
afternoon.

The court also fined the duo Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer two
months more in jail. It came up with the judgment in absence of the two
convicts and issued an arrest warrant against them, court clerk Mehedi Hasan
told BSS.

According to the case documents, plaintiff Toufik Mahmud ordered a Yamaha R15
bike through the platform on March 20, 2021, and paid Taka 2.45 lakh. He
again ordered two more bikes on April 3, 2021, and paid Taka 5.90 lakh more.
But the e-commerce company failed to supply the customer any bikes within the
fixed time of 45 days.

He contacted Evaly headquarters in Dhanmandi, where he was given two bank
cheques. But, the Evaly authorities later called him and asked not to cash
the cheques as there was no sufficient balance in their account. Toufik later
contacted Evaly authorities numerous times, but they failed to pay him back.

After that, Toufik sent them legal notice and ultimately filed the case on
February 4, 2024.
