AL leader Fakhrul Anwar arrested in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 2, 2025 (BSS)-Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested Fakhrul Anwar, former industry and commerce affairs secretary of  North District Awami League (AL), was arrested during his son’s wedding ceremony at a community centre in the city last night.

Fakhrul is the younger brother of the former Member of Parliament from Fatikchhari late Rafiqul Anwar and uncle of ex MP Khadijatul Anwar Sony.

Muhammad Faisal Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of CMP (North), said a special team of Khulshi Thana police conducted a raid at the Navy Convention Center at 11 pm on Saturday night.

"Fakhrul Anwar was taken into custody from the wedding venue yesterday around 11.30 pm. A case against him is currently under investigation," he added. 

Eyewitnesses reported that around 9 pm, a group of youths gathered outside the venue and chanted slogans , "My brother is in the grave, why the murderers in outside?"

Despite rumors on social media that Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Chairman and former MP Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, along with former MP Khadijatul Anwar Soni, were present at the ceremony, but eyewitnesses denied their attendance.

Khadijatul Anwar Soni, who is Fakhrul Anwar's niece, was not at the event, he said.

Many leaders and activists of the Chattogram North District Awami League attended the ceremony but reportedly left after the situation turned chaotic.

Former mayor Manjur Alam, who was initially present, also left the venue quickly after the incident.
