Suspended Assistant Commissioner Urmi indicted in defamation case

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2025 (BSS) – A court here today framed charges against suspended assistant commissioner Tapasi Tabassum Urmi in a case filed for making derogatory remarks about Abu Sayed and other martyrs of student-led July-August mass uprising.
 
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order, scrapping a discharge petition filed by the accused's counsel.
 
The court on January 26 had set today for holding a hearing on the charge framing in the case.  
Gono Adhikar Parishad higher council member Abu Hanif filed the case on October 8, 2024.
 
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain after recording the statement of the complainant, summoned the accused on November 28. Urmi surrendered before the court on that day and pleaded for bail. The court after holding a hearing on her plea, allowed her bail on Taka 500 bond.
 
Tapasi Tabassum Urmi on October 5 last year  made a Facebook post from her account, making derogatory remarks about not only the martyrs of the July-August mass uprising but also the chief adviser of the interim government. She was made OSD the next day and was suspended on October 7.
