DHAKA, Feb 4, 2025 (BSS) – Senior Joint Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed today said the country now needs a political government which is accountable to the people for overcoming the economic crisis and the uncertainty the nation is facing.

“The country needs a democratic government at this moment as the country’s economic crisis is deepening day by day. No one has the courage to invest as the country has no democratic government. All at home and abroad are in same kind of uncertainty. A political government accountable to the people is required to overcome the uncertainty,” he said.

He made the remarks while paying rich tributes to the Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman by placing floral wreaths at his grave along with the leaders of the newly formed convening committee of Manikganj district at Sher-e-Banglanagar here.

“Don’t make people confused in the name of reforms. BNP is repeatedly saying that it is in favor of reforms. For this, it is important to strengthen democracy,” he said.

Mentioning that the democracy means the power of the people, he said, “Hand over the power to the people. Election roadmap will have to be announced quickly. It is not the issue of the government who will form party”.

He said that the interim government has a lot to do to establish democracy in the country.

“At first, the people's right to vote must be ensured. Because, the people of the country have not been able to go to the polling stations to cast vote for the last 16-17 years, he said.

The BNP spokesperson said Sheikh Hasina had taken away the power of the people of the country.

The fascist Sheikh Hasina has fled the country in face of the students-people movement and an environment has been created for establishing democracy in the country.

“It is time to return the power of the people to them,” he stated.

Rizvi said that the price of gas has been increased by Tk 19 per cylinder, which is unreasonable and anti-people.

“This abnormal increase in the price of gas will put a terrible pressure on the lives and livelihoods of limited and low-income people,” he said.

Rizvi stressed the need for ensuring accountability, saying that if this government had accountability, the price of 12kg gas cylinder would not have been increased by Tk 19.

The senior BNP leader said that the prices of daily necessities are increasing every day and the government has not been able to reduce the price of rice.

“If gas prices are increased, it is nothing but a 'stab in the back' of the people,” he said.

Manikganj District BNP Convener Afroza Khan Rita, Dhaka Divisional Organizing Secretary Kazi Saidul Alam Babul, Finance Secretary Mahmudur Rahman Sumon and SA Jinnah Kabir, among others, were present.
