DHAKA, Mar 08, 2025 (BSS)- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) National Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has said a quarter is out to misinterpret Islam and Khilafat to mislead people.

He said this while addressing a discussion as the chief guest on the occasion of the 19th imprisonment day of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman at Jatiya Press Club.

'Uttarchanchal Chhatra Forum' organized the discussion with Atiqur Rahman Rumon, convener of 'Amra BNP Paribar' in the chair.
BNP's Rajshahi divisional assistant organizing secretary Amirul Islam Khan Alim, 'Amra BNP Paribar' adviser Md. Abul Kashem, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal Organizing Secretary Nazmul Hasan, Zia Shishu-Kishore Sangothon General Secretary Mosharraf Hossain, 'Amra BNP Paribar' member secretary agriculturalist Moksedul Momin Mithun, members Shakil Ahmed, Farhad Ali Sajeeb, Rubel Amin, Shahadat Hossain and former Chhatra Dal vice-president Tariqul Islam Tito spoke at the discussion meeting.

Tuku said the people of the country are waiting for Tarique Rahman's return. He hoped the acting chairman will return home soon and elections must be held.

On the night of March 7, 2007, a team of joint forces during the then 'military-backed caretaker government' arrested Tarique Rahman from his house on Mainul Road in Dhaka Cantonment.

Tarique Rahman was put on remand for questioning. At that time, Tarique Rahman had to serve 18 months in prison. He was arrested in 13 cases at that time. He got bail from the court in phases in those cases.

Tarique Rahman was released on bail from these cases on September 3, 2008. Eight days after his release, he left Dhaka for London on September 11 with the permission of the then caretaker government.

Since then, Tarique Rahman has been staying in London with his family. From there, he is serving as the acting chairman of BNP.
