DHAKA, Mar 10, 2025 (BSS) – Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain today said multifaceted reform measures have been taken to transform all the prisons across the country into service oriented ones.

“Initiatives have been taken to make the prisons into service providing as well as humane organizations,” he said at a press briefing, held at the city’s Bakshibazar Prisons Headquarters conference room here.

As part of the measures, a hotline was introduced to know information about the prisoners. There are digital visitors’ management software and comprehensive prisoner management which would deal with PC cash, conversation over telephone, canteen management and treatment of the prisoners, he said.

Setting up a Central Jail Hospital for ensuring better treatment for the prisoners is now at the final stage, he added.

GPS tracker ankle band will be tied in the prisoners’ ankles to ensure their safe and riskless journey, he said.

The big jails across the country are being brought under solar power to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply alongside saving huge revenue, he said.

To accommodate the additional prisoners in the jails, Motaher Hossain said they are introducing more jails, adding that they have already set up a jail in Sylhet which is familiar as metropolitan jail and initiative is taken to open a special jail in Keraniganj.

Mentioning that the prisons across the country will be made correction centres, the IG Prisons said, “The Bangladesh Prisons and Correction Service Act is now at final stage of (government) approval.”

He said they are bringing reforms to the corrupt system of 15/16 years to give all concerned a sigh of relief.
