DHAKA, Mar 10, 2025 (BSS) - A writ petition was filed today with the High Court (HC) challenging the legality of administering oath of the country’s President by the National Parliament Speaker.

The petition also sought a directive that the chief justice should administer the oath to the president.

Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Barrister Omar Faruk filed the writ petition on behalf of lyricist and writer Shahidullah Farazi.

Cabinet Secretary, Senior Secretary of the law ministry and Registrar of the Supreme Court (SC) have been made respondents to the writ.

It is mentionable that under Bangladesh's original constitution, the president was sworn in by the Chief Justice. A later amendment to the Constitution introduced the provision allowing the speaker to administer the oath to the president.
