DHAKA, March 17, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today placed former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan on a four-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of one Rafiqul in the city's Badda area during the student-led July-August mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam passed the order as police produced Shahjahan Khan before the court and pleaded to place him on a five-day remand in the case.

According to the case documents, Md Rafiqul Islam, 37, joined an anti-discrimination student movement rally in front of the Bismillah Hotel in Badda on July 19, 2024. At around 1 pm, police along with Awami League cadres opened fire on the rally, injuring many including Rafiqul. He was rushed to hospital, where Rafiqul succumbed to his injuries on August 27 last year.

Rafiqul's uncle Muhammad Lutfur Rahman filed the case with the Badda Police Station against 37 including the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police arrested Shahjahan Khan from the city's Dhanmandi area on September 5, 2024. He was shown arrested in many cases and already remanded in those.
