ACC starts probe against Cox's Bazar ex-mayor Mahbubur

COX'S BAZAR, Mar 18, 2025(BSS) -The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started investigation against former mayor of Cox's Bazar municipality Md Mahbubur Rahman for his alleged involvement in various types of corruption, official sources said here today.

ACC Assistant Director (AD) of Cox's Bazar Integrated District Office Md Sakhawat Hossain told BSS that he started investigation against the former mayor of Cox's Bazar Municipality after getting the responsibility.

A series of allegations of corruption were raised against the immediate past mayor of Cox's Bazar municipality who was also the Organizing Secretary of Cox's Bazar district Awami League. He was elected as the mayor of Cox's Bazar municipality in 2023.

These allegations were submitted to the ACC headquarters earlier and the commission on February 12 instructed its Cox's Bazar office to appoint an investigation officer to this effect. The commission also asked the district office to send a report after investigating the allegations against the former mayor.

According to the allegations, Mahbubur Rahman, immediately after his election as mayor, developed his own circle at the municipality for adopting various types of corruptions. He realized crores of money from the municipality by recruiting municipal staff, buying land for setting dumping station, cleaning drains and selling shops from an under construction market at Baro Bazar area in the town.

He also realized crores of Taka by appointing his own men as contractors for different development projects, the sources added.
